The end-of-school transition
Whether it’s the end of JK, grade 6, or grade 9, the end of the school year can bring with it mixed emotions. Here are some ideas to support the students in your life:
Ask low-pressure questions like, “What are you going to miss?” or “What are you most looking forward to this summer?”
Create a special “goodbye” for the school year: write notes to teachers, make a memory page, or share favourite moments at dinner.
Help your kiddo(s) stay connected with friends by planning a few summer playdates or video calls.
Give kids space to talk without rushing to “fix” the feeling.
Be okay with downtime. Many kids are more emotionally tired at the end of the school year than adults realize. It’s okay to not hae every day scheduled as soon as school ends.
If transitions are especially hard, create a summer schedule so everyone can see what’s coming up.
Wishing you all the best as you approach the end of the school year!
